I agree with you that its not as quick as commercial sites and that the features arent as rich, but from the pricing that I've seen for these other services, I really don't see a comparable alternative. Most sites expect me to pay close to $19.99 a MONTH to monitor just 1 site when I dont need all the bells and whistles, just an email alert when my site goes down.
