I used some local provider for domain registrations in the past and switched all domain names to Godaddy now. My costs are lowered to 50% from my previous budget and I have 24/7 access to all of them.

@Amrit,

I totally agree, the website owner need to have direct access to the domain name. I could be very time intensive to transfer a domain where you don't have the access to unlock or changing the profile. Godaddy, eNom and Namecheap (and a some others) offering great online control panels

Great post. I would also like to mention one more thing that if possible one should avoid getting a domain name registered through some web hosting companies. As it is so easy these days to register your own domain name you should do it yourself so that you have complete control over your domain.

[...] Although esoteric domain names sound cool it takes a lot of time to get recognition for them. Another thing, definitely do not get your domain name register through a third-party web hosting company. It’s very hard then to move to another host in future. Registering a domain name is very easy. Just take out your credit card and log on to, for instance, GoDaddy.com and register yourself a domain name.
I always try and secure the .com domain first as it is always more valuable and then I check to see if the country domain (.com.au) is available.
