Google Wave – Invitations and YouTube Gadget

google_wave_logoFinally I’m in, I got my invitation for Google Wave! After creating the first Wave pages I can say that the system looks really cool and I’m very happy that it’s browser based and not some Windows desktop application.

Why should I use Google Wave?

First what people asked me after I told them about Google Wave was: “Why should I use it and what is so special?” If the same people are already on Twitter and/or Facebook it’s easy to explain; It’s like Facebook, Twitter or MSN. Google Wave is a tool to share your content with other friends in real time and also private communication tool. Currently is Google Wave a preview release and I’m sure we will see much more features before the system is out of a future Beta period. I think a lot of people are missing the function to publish their content to others users without adding them to a conversation and you can’t discover stuff or profiles from others. On the other site there are already features like real time content updates and adding content is very easy and powerful. Adding content is like creating a word document with abilities to add images, links, gadgets and attachments.

Gadgets are allowed but there is no function for YouTube videos

As I said before, its possible to add gadgets to your Wave. Add Google maps, simple polls and many gadgets from the google gadget gallery. Since Google Wave is in an early state, not every 3rd party gadget works and adding gadgets is limited. The first thing I noticed is that there is no standard function to add YouTube videos to your Wave. We (finalwebsites.com) created a small YouTube Gadget Generator to create your custom YouTube Video object. Using this generator it’s possible to create a gadget from every YouTube Video URL.

I would love one because I would be very grateful and I don’t want to feel left out any longer ;/

Ive found that google wave is still quite buggy, and very slow with all the javascript – Im not sure if it would be a good idea to load videos in waves – it will probably make the javascript rendering even slower.

HI Olaf, Can you send me a Google Wave Invitation. I’m testing a service to integrate Flash/Flex with Google Wave, so have an Google Wave will be nice.

@PHP Guru,
don’t worry about the load, the video is not loaded into Google Wave. As all other Gadgets they use an IFRAME to show the content. Maybe you can try the gadget and tell us your experience?

@Eric,
I know how you feel :)
Please send me your Google Account ID (Comments are all moderated)

@flashvnn,
Great idea, you can use a gadget to include flash into you wave docs :)
Send me your google account for the invitation (all comments are moderated)

Hi PHP Guru,
Just checked a wave page with more than 100 followers, you’re right that wave takes a lot of memory and everything becomes slow. I don’t think that a YT gadget will be a problem (it’s an IFRAME).
Maybe we should start with smaller wave pages in the beginning :D

Hello Eric,
just send the invite to your gmail address (9 invites left)
Enjoy Google Wave!

Thanks a lot. I haven’t received the email yet in regards to the invitation which makes me wonder if something is wrong with Wave at the moment. Waiting patiently & very appreciative.

looks like an attempt from google to create a social community. let’s see how this works. some google applications have been known to have instant success

For reason of mental sanity. I need Wave because I’m really close to going mad about it! Also I could get fired because I’ve been wondering about trying to find an invite for days!
Thanks!

Hi Eric, I know from other people that invitations didn’t arrive in real time. I think “nominations” are turned into invitations within 24 hours.

@Truco, just added you to the list (8 invitations left)

@John Zagurasky,
I don’t get it, Google Wave is a hot item for almost a half year! btw Google has many Social services, check Google friend for example. Also other services like Google Reader and Blogspot having social community features.

Many thanks and noted. Are widgets/waves/whatever allowed to be posted to public-facing sites at the moment?

@Eric, since the “wave” system is open, it should be allowed (finally it’s your content).

Google’s strategy to open a new product to a smaller group is not new, they did this with Gmail too.

So if you have to share something regarding Google wave: Spread the word!

Hey Olaf,

I am ruby on rails programmer and I’d like to check that new stuff out. Hope, you’ve got still some left. :)

Cheers Pete
PS: Your site rocks!

@Pete,
I added your gmail address to the invitation list.

This information is from the page where I have to enter the invites:

Invitations will not be sent immediately. We have a lot of stamps to lick.

@Olaf,

thank you very much !! Can’t wait to try it out!
Cheers Pete

Hey, do you have any more invitations left?
My reasons for wanting one?
Because I’m a good person and I deserve one!- I believe it, and so should you!
=)

Hey Ro,
I see you understood my message ;)
Added your Gmail address to the Google wave invitation list.

BTW. It’s strange these days. The last weeks most of my blogs were mentioned at twitter and got almost no comments.
This one get more comments and not a single tweet :(

Thank you so much Olaf!!
I’m one of those not-so-rare anti-twitterers but I’m sorry for your lack of tweets.

@Olaf,

Thank you very much for the invite!
I’m sorry about the lack of tweets.

Unfortunately the invitation still hasn’t come to my gmail :(
Will keep waiting!
Regards

@Truco it seems that Google doesn’t process the invitations in real time. The first two from the list below were processed the same day.

Google Wave Invitations

Heloo, I would like to get a wave account, I’ve read a lot of stuff about it and I will appreciate a lot if you could put me in the invitation list.
thank you

Ohh yeah,

that’s true, I am also patiently waiting for invitation.
It’s been 2 days now. :)

Pete

I think you guys are now on the invitation list for the next “wave” ;)
Does someone has searched on Google for information about this delay?

Hi again, I was googling little and mentioned that sometimes it could take longer than 24h, so I just want to ask if I am on your invitation list, just to know if I have to wait…
Thank you.

Hi Vadim,
since the first invitations are still not processed I stopped adding new ones (including you). I keep the requests and will add new invitations to that list if someone from the list has confirmed that he got a Wave account. (I trying to keep the comment list as short as possible ;) )

Hey guys,

I just got an invite from gWave. I took about 3-4 days.
THX olaf.

Cheers Pete

@Pete, thanks for the update!
@Vadim, added your gmail address on the list

Just got the invite (3 days).
Thanks again!!

Olaf,

Do you have any more invites left? If so, could you send me one? Sure is nice of you to give them out to strangers. I feel like a kid waiting for a gift from Santa. Yes, I believe in Santa. And, I have been good.

Robert

@Robert

hehe, maybe you get one from saint Nicolas in your shoes ;)
Please send me your gmail address.

Hi Olaf! First off I’d like to thank you for sharing your invites with everyone, and giving us the opportunity to use Google Wave. Could you please send me one too? Thanks a lot!

*Speaking of Christmas presents in shoes, I think that’s something they do in Germany?

Hi Josh,

I added your gmail address to the list.
Yes they place a shoe in the night to dec. 6th in Germany. But here in the Netherlands we celebrate “Sinterklaas” (saint Nicolas) much more, it’s just placing a shoe.
Check these photos at google.

I’ve received the invite. Thanks a lot, Olaf! Really appreciate it.

I love how “sinterklaas” is so much more like the original Saint Nicolas than our American version of Santa Claus. The Catholic priestly garb, and even the shepherd’s staff is maintained. Very interesting :)

yeah “sinterklaas” is great for the kids here, actually Dutch people celebrate this day more than Christmas
…since these comments are so much about Christmas, I should change the ads to each some money while promoting gifts :D

Lol, that’s be perfect, wouldn’t it? I’ve never been to Europe before, and from you’ve said, I imagine the December holiday atmosphere must be very different from the way it feels here in the US. In a cozy, homely sort of way :)

Olaf,

Here’s my gmail address. Interesting, and all this time, I thought shoes were what Santa put coals in for all the bad boys and girls.

@Robert, added your gmail to the address…

Hi, if anyone has any invitation left please give one to me!!
I’m really in need of wave invitation, i couldn’t tolerate to be left out anymore, please guys send me invitation…

Hi Olaf,

Could you please send me an invite if you have any left. Am a big fan of this blog and am really into beta testing new soft…thnx in advance.

I would like an invite to google wave. I think Google will take Facebook to the next level with Wave and I don’t want to be left behind.

~Dave

@sonu, yassin bendi and Dave,

added you three to the list.

Just noticed that I got 10 more invites in my account :)

Post here some “cool” comment if you like to have an invite…

Hi! can u invite me? i really wan to test google wave as its the hotting thing now!

Hi Shawn, you’re on the list!
it will take some time before you get mail from Google

Thank you Olaf :) i will wait patiently for the mail then :) thank you!

After I invited you, I send one invite to myself :)
This way I get another 8 invites I will share here…
(@Shawn, will say you should have that mail too)

Hi Olaf, this is a long shot since it’s been a month since your last act of giveaway kindness was posted but would you happen to have another invite?
I would like one bc I like to learn about new things and this has been a great year for me so this would be the perfect way to end it :)
All the best to everyone! Have a great new year!

Thanks :)
